Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian left-back Alex Telles from Portuguese giants FC Porto on the transfer deadline day.
As confirmed by the club’s official website, Manchester United have completed their second major transfer of the summer transfer window, with Alex Telles joining the club from FC Porto.
The 27-year-old began his career in his homeland Brazil with Juventude and had a stint at Gremio before moving to Europe in 2014 when Turkish giants Galatasaray signed him up. The left-back had a loan stint with Inter Milan before he moved to FC Porto in the summer of 2016.
Since joining the Portuguese giants, the defender grew into one of their most important players. Telles played a key role in their top-flight title triumph last season – his second with the club after having won a title in 2017/18 as well.
A move to Manchester United had been mooted for quite a while now, with the one-time capped Brazilian international entering the final year of his contract with the Portugues outfit. And now, the club has successfully completed the signing of the left-back.
Telles has signed a four-year contract with the 20-time English champions, with the club retaining the option of extending it by another year. Upon completion of the transfer, the Brazilian said: “To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.

“You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here. I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United. The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.”
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomed his new signing with a lot of praise, saying: “He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad. Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.”
Telles becomes just the second player to join Manchester United this summer following the arrival of Donny van de Beek from Ajax last month. As per BBC, the 27-year-old arrives in a deal worth €15 million (£13.6 million) plus €2 million (£1.8 million) in add-ons.
His signing will come as music to the ears of the supporters after Luke Shaw was decimated by Tottenham in Manchester United’s humiliating 1-6 defeat at the hands of Tottenham on Sunday.
Telles could slot in as the first-choice left-back, given his impressive performances over the past couple of years at Porto. What this means for academy graduate Brandon Williams remains to be seen. The youngster is the subject of a loan enquiry from Southampton and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United do sanction a move for the teenager.
