Transfer Rumour: Tottenham join Manchester United in Sergio Reguilon pursuit

Manchester United have reportedly been joined by Tottenham in the race to sign Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid this summer.

According to a report by Daily Mail, Sergio Reguilon is the subject of interest from Tottenham over a move in the summer transfer window. Spurs’ Premier League rivals Manchester United are also keen on securing the services of the Spanish defender, who is valued at £25 million by Real Madrid.

Sergio Reguilon joined Real Madrid as an eight-year-old in 2005 and progressed through the ranks over the next decade before making the grade with the Castilla side in 2015. But, he had to wait till the 2018/19 season to break into the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu. In the season, however, Reguilon made quite an impression for a sub-par Real Madrid side.

Reguilon, though, found himself going down the pecking order after the return of Zinedine Zidane, with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy ahead of him. He subsequently joined Sevilla on loan last summer, enjoying a fine campaign with the La Liga outfit, but he could be on the move away from Real Madrid for good this summer, with Manchester United and now Tottenham interested.

Manchester United appear to be in the transfer market for a left-back this summer, having also been linked with Alex Telles lately. The decision to ponder a move for a left-sided full-back makes sense as well, considering Luke Shaw’s well-documented history of fitness issues during his spell at Manchester United.

Brandon Williams filled in for Shaw when required last term, but could be an option as a right-back after being used in the role by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the pre-season friendly against Aston Villa. As a result, Manchester United ought to sign a left-back to challenge Shaw for the first-choice spot, making Reguilon a viable target. Tottenham, on the other hand, need a starting option right away.

Danny Rose is reaching a stormy end to his time at Tottenham after being demoted from the first-team. This decision leaves Jose Mourinho with Ben Davies as his only natural option at left-back, with Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga the other makeshift prospects. However, Davies has been on a downward trajectory of late and Spurs could do with an upgrade.

As a result, former Manchester United and Real Madrid manager Mourinho has set his sights on Reguilon as a possible option. Meanwhile, apart from Tottenham and United, Sevilla have also been touted as a possible option for Reguilon, although the reliable Fabrizio Romano has claimed that they are out of the race to sign the Real Madrid full-back.

Signing Reguilon would cost Manchester United and Tottenham around £25 million, although Real Madrid also want to insert a buyback clause into the deal, something Manchester United are averse to, as per Fabrizio Romano. However, with talks ongoing between the Red Devils and Reguilon, a move could well be on the cards.
