Everton will reportedly be rivalled by Leeds United in the race to sign Sergio Romero from Manchester United this summer.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is eager to swoop Sergio Romero away from Manchester United, but the Toffees will face competition from Leeds United in his pursuit. Manchester United are open to the prospect of cashing in on the Argentine goalkeeper.

Romero joined Manchester United from Sampdoria in the summer of 2015 and has since been the deputy to David de Gea. Over the last half-a-decade, the 33-year-old has usually been used in cup competitions, delivering whenever called upon by his managers.

In 61 appearances across all competitions, the Argentine international has conceded just 27 goals while keeping an impressive 39 clean sheets. Such exploits have seen him being regarded as one of the best backup goalkeepers in the world. However, it seems like Romero’s time at Manchester United is set to come to an end this summer.

While David de Gea’s struggles over the past couple of seasons have made him a frustrating figure, it appears as if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to put his faith in the Spaniard. Furthermore, it seems as if Dean Henderson is going to challenge de Gea to the no. 1 goalkeeping slot. And so, Romero could be destined to leave Manchester United. Everton and Leeds United are interested in him.

At Everton, Jordan Pickford has not managed to endear himself to Carlo Ancelotti, after making a number of errors this past season. The Italian manager is now keen to sign a top class goalkeeper who can vie with the English international for the first-choice spot. Everton, though, will have newly promoted Leeds United to battle in pursuit of the Manchester United star.

Marcelo Bielsa currently has Illan Meslier and Kiko Casilla at his disposal in the goalkeeping department. However, recent reports have suggested that the Leeds boss is reportedly open to the prospect of offloading Casilla to make way for a new custodian, with Arsenal deputy Emiliano Martinez on his radar too.

There had also been suggestions that Chelsea had joined Leeds and Everton in pursuit of Romero, but Manchester United are unlikely to let the experienced keeper join their rivals. The Toffees and Leeds, therefore, remain in the hunt for Romero now.

What now remains to be seen is if either of the Premier League duo do end up securing the services of the 33-year-old this summer, or if some other suitors swoop him away instead. What appears to be certain is that Romero is eager to make his way out of Manchester United, with Henderson set to replace him after signing a renewal with the Red Devils.
