Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a summer raid on Dutch heavyweights Ajax for the signing of winger Quincy Promes.
According to a report from The Sun, Arsenal are planning a £25 million swoop for Ajax and Netherlands winger Quincy Promes in the ongoing transfer window.
The 28-year-old Promes returned to boyhood club Ajax last summer from La Liga giants Sevilla in a £14 million deal. The versatile attacker enjoyed a fine run in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign in Netherlands, finishing with a brilliant tally of 16 goals and 5 assists from 28 appearances across all competitions.
Promes’s exploits seem to have put him firmly on the radar of Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has done a fairly solid job since Unai Emery’s tenure ended, leading the Gunners to the FA Cup triumph. However, for them to be anywhere near the top four in the coming season, the squad will need to be strengthened in multiple positions.
As far as the wide areas are concerned, though, Arsenal seem to be pretty well-stocked at the moment. Nicolas Pepe is starting to show signs of why they shelled out such a huge sum for him last summer, while Bukayo Saka has enjoyed a fine breakout campaign.
Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also been predominantly used on the wings this term. While his contract situation has raised a lot of concerns, recent reports suggest that he is ready to pen a new deal with the North London giants.
In addition, Gabriel Martinelli, who impressed before injury cut his season short, is also an option. They also have academy man Reiss Nelson for cover. Moreover, the Gunners are also closing in on the capture of Willian, whose contract with Chelsea ran out this month.
But that doesn’t seem to have stopped Arteta from pursuing the signing of another winger in the form of Promes. The 28-year-old, who can play on either flanks or as a No.10, was on the Gunners’ radar last year as well, before he completed his return to Ajax.
Promes, too, seems keen on a switch to the Emirates, as per the report. A source close to the player told The Sun, “Quincy would go in a heartbeat. It would be a great move for him – and Arsenal.”
Promes has four years left on his current contract with Ajax. However, as per the report, the Dutch giants would consider selling the 40-time capped Netherlands international. While he would add more firepower to the Gunners’ attack, there are other pressing concerns that Arteta needs to address. So, it remains to be seen if they do make a move for the 28-year-old.
