Manchester United are bracing themselves for a Werder Bremen raid in regards to their youth sensation Tahith Chong.
According to SportBILD, Werder Bremen are hoping to sign Tahith Chong. The Manchester United youngster has been identified as a perfect replacement for Milot Rashica as the Bundesliga outfit looks to rebuild after a poor season.
Bremen sporting director, Frank Baumann, along with the club’s scouting head, Clemens Fritz, reportedly held talks with Chong’s consultant, Erkan Alkan on Tuesday. An agreement, however, is yet to be reached while Manchester United are also unlikely to offload their youth sensation that easily.
Moreover, Werder Bremen reportedly lack the financial firepower to sanction a move for Chong. As a result, a loan move is being discussed as the Green and Whites brace themselves for the likely departure of Rashica, who has been linked with a move to Wolves.
Baumann has already commented on the quality Chong can bring to the table as he has a “lot of pace” and is capable of “coming on the outside track”. Indeed, the youngster can play on both flanks and has even featured in a central role, at times.
It is combined with his raw pace and an ability to drift past players at ease, making him an ideal strike-partner for US international, Josh Sargent and Yuya Osako. The player himself could enjoy the much-needed game-time, especially with Leonardo Bittencourt returning to TSG Hoffenheim, following the end of his loan spell.
Even for Manchester United, Chong’s move to Bundesliga only bodes well given the youngster’s struggles in making a Premier League breakthrough. The 20-year-old has featured in only three league matches since being promoted to the senior side last summer.
Chong has enjoyed immense success in the reserve league, however, notably being involved in ten goals in six matches and an overall tally of 14 goals in 31 games. These statistics certainly indicate the fact that the youngster is ready to make his mark at the highest level of football.
That could be a difficult job at Manchester United, especially following the recent exploits of Mason Greenwood, who netted 18 goals in all competitions so far this season. Additionally, the Red Devils have been strongly linked with a move for Jadon Sancho this summer.
Werder Bremen, therefore, is the ideal destination for Chong as he seeks to take the next step in his career. He will look to replicate the success of other Premier League youngsters like Jonjoe Kenny and Sancho, should he join the German club this summer.
