Tottenham have reportedly been given the opportunity to sign former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey on loan this summer.
If a report by The Sun is to be believed, Tottenham have been handed the chance to sign Aaron Ramsey in a shock move in the summer transfer window. Juventus are facing crippling financial problems due to the coronavirus pandemic and are looking to loan out the former Arsenal star, who pockets £400,000 every week in Turin.
Ramsey spent over a decade at Arsenal, where he slowly overcame injury troubles to establish himself as a pivotal figure for the Premier League heavyweights. His time at Arsenal, though, came to an end last summer, when he joined Juventus on a free transfer.
At the Allianz Stadium, Ramsey has had his fair share of injury troubles, but has still managed to turn out 24 times in all competitions for the Bianconeri, with 4 goals and an assist to show for his efforts. However, the coronavirus pandemic seems to have adversely hit Juventus’s finances, as a result of which they are looking to loan Ramsey out. He has now been offered to Tottenham.
While the links with the former Arsenal man might be curious to say the least, Tottenham do have the need to sign a midfielder following a difficult 2019/20 campaign. One look at Jose Mourinho’s midfield options and it is clear why someone like Ramsey could potentially do a job for Spurs.
The ex-Manchester United and Chelsea boss has the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Oliver Skipp and Gedson Fernandes as the options to play in the double pivot. However, none of these players has managed to make a sustained impact this term for Tottenham, be it when it comes to providing goals from midfield or defensive solidity.
On top of that, with Ndombele linked with a possible exit, just one year after joining Tottenham and it is clear that the north Londoners need to sign a midfielder. To that end, Ramsey appears to be a viable target, with the former Arsenal man being one of the most enterprising midfielders in Europe. However, this rumour appears to be absurd, for two reasons.
Firstly, Ramsey’s history with and fondness of Arsenal means he is unlikely to agree to a move to Tottenham, even if it is a temporary transfer. Secondly, it is unclear if Spurs can afford his £400,000-a-week wages, especially when it has been reported that they will be working under budgetary restrictions this summer, having had to take out a loan of £175 million.
A possible solution could be wage-splitting, while clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea could enter the fray as well. For now, though, it looks like Tottenham are one of many sides offered the chance to sign Ramsey, although it remains to be seen if a shock move for the former Arsenal star sees the light of the day.
