Transfer News: Manchester United reignite interest in Mexican ace Hirving Lozano

Manchester United are reportedly set to rekindle their interest in Napoli forward Hirving Lozano, who hasn’t lived up to expectations since moving to Italy.

According to a report from Corriere dello Sport, as carried by ESPN Mexico, Manchester United are set to reignite their interest in Napoli and Mexico attacker Hirving Lozano in the summer transfer window.

Lozano came through the youth ranks at Mexican outfit Pachuca and having made an impression at the first-team level, he was signed by Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven in 2017-18. The 24-year-old enjoyed two very fruitful seasons with the club, before Napoli signed him last summer.

However, things haven’t really worked out for Lozano with the Partenopei. The Mexican international was initially played out of position by former boss Carlo Ancelotti, while he has struggled for game time under current manager Gennaro Gattuso. Till date, he has managed just three goals and two assists in 28 games in all competitions.

Now, Manchester United are looking to capitalise on his situation and make an attempt to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United are long-term admirers of the 24-year-old Mexican attacker. According to the former president of Pachuca, the Red Devils have been monitoring the youngsters since he was a teenager. The 20-time English champions had expressed interest in snapping up the winger last summer, but were beaten to his signing by Napoli.

Manchester United are set to strengthen their attack this summer with Jadon Sancho closing in on a transfer. However, the Red Devils would benefit from adding another top quality attacker to the ranks as Juan Mata is not getting any younger, whereas Jesse Lingard is being linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

While he may have struggled in Italy this season, Lozano’s footballing ability is in no doubt. Moreover, given the cult following he enjoys in Mexico, Manchester United are hoping to capitalise on his potential market value, just like they did with fellow Mexican Javier Hernandez last decade.

Chicharito became a cult hero at Old Trafford during his time at Manchester United and helped the club expand its fanbase in Mexico. They are now hoping to repeat the same trick by signing Lozano in the summer transfer window.

Valued at £38.5 million, Lozano is contracted with Napoli till the summer of 2024. This puts Napoli in a strong negotiating position. Moreover, Everton are also interested in signing the 24-year-old and are willing to offer Moise Kean in exchange, which could tempt the Serie A side to do business with the Toffees.

It remains to be seen if there is any truth to Manchester United’s supposed interest in Lozano, and if so, it will be interesting to see if they make a move for the 24-year-old come summer.
