Manchester United are set to be battled by Newcastle United in the race to sign John McGinn from Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United continue to remain interested in signing John McGinn in the summer transfer window. However, the Premier League heavyweights are facing some stiff competition from Newcastle United in pursuit of the 25-year-old Aston Villa midfielder.

John McGinn has been in England for less than two years, but has seen his stock rise exponentially in this time. Signed by Aston Villa in the summer of 2018, the Scottish international played a key role as they achieved promotion back to the Premier League before making a seamless transition to top-flight football.

This season, the 25-year-old has been a pivotal figure in the Midlands club’s bid to keep their top-flight status intact, featuring in every Premier League game before a long-term ankle injury left him on the sidelines. However, in just half a season, McGinn had made enough impact to attract the likes of Manchester United.

Manchester United had even been linked with McGinn ahead of the start of the season, with some reports even indicating that they had been advised by Sir Alex Ferguson to make a move for him. The Red Devils did not bolster their attack last summer and have since seen Scott McTominay and Fred impress to no end in the middle of the park.

However, the uncertain future of Paul Pogba means Manchester United have to keep their options open and could be in the market for a midfielder this summer. To that end, James Rodriguez is one of the players linked with a possible move. And, McGinn is another candidate who could fill the hole left by the potential departure of Pogba.

Manchester United, though, face stiff competition from Newcastle United, who, as per Daily Star, are ready to make a £30 million bid to secure the services of the 25-year-old. It is interesting to note that it was Steve Bruce who gave McGinn his big break in England, signing him while he was still the Aston Villa manager.

The interest in McGinn is interesting, though, with Bruce having a glut of midfielders at his disposal. Having said that, the player would be an upgrade on almost every Newcastle midfielder. As for the Magpies and Manchester United’s chances of snapping McGinn up, they would be in good stead if Villa go back down to the Championship.

However, Aston Villa will fancy their chances of keeping hold of one of their most important player if they can manage to remain in the Premier League. For now, it looks like McGinn has no shortage of admirers and suitors and it remains to be seen if Manchester United can fend off competition from Newcastle in the race to sign the 25-year-old.
