Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing James Rodriguez from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Manchester United have revisited their interest in James Rodriguez. The Colombian international, who is also being courted by Everton, Juventus and Napoli, is likely to leave Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
James Rodriguez has struggled to carve out a place for himself in the Real Madrid first-team setup under the tutelage of Zinedine Zidane. Having returned from a mixed bag of a loan spell at Bayern Munich, the 28-year-old nearly left Real Madrid last summer, with Napoli heavily linked with him.
A move eventually failed to materialise and the player was subsequently integrated in Zidane’s squad. However, he has continued to struggle at the Bernabeu, having turned out just 13 times in all competitions this term, racking up a mere 650 minutes of footballing action.
As a result, a summer move away from Real Madrid is likely, with Manchester United among those in his pursuit. The continued interest from Manchester United, though, is curious, considering they signed Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window.
With the Portuguese midfielder making quite an impression, the need to sign another attacking midfielder does not appear to be urgent despite the fact that Jesse Lingard is being heavily linked with a summer exit from Manchester United.
However, with the future of Paul Pogba shrouded under a cloud of uncertainty, James Rodriguez could be a viable target considering his ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder. Manchester United, though, will need to fend off competition from the likes of Everton, Juventus and Napoli in the race to sign the Colombian international from Real Madrid.
As for his future at Real Madrid, a summer exit is highly likely, seeing as Martin Odegaard is touted to usurp him in the pecking order after returning from loan at Real Sociedad. By signing him, Manchester United could enjoy ideally the peak years of the player’s career, although his recent fitness record poses a concern.
What now remains to be seen is if Manchester United are serious with their interest in James Rodriguez, in which case, a formal offer could soon be on the cards. For now, it looks like the 28-year-old is on his last legs as a Real Madrid player.
