Barcelona are reportedly intent on swapping Nelson Semedo for Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo in the summer transfer window.
As per a report from The Telegraph, La Liga champions Barcelona are interested in signing Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo. The Catalans are considering the possibility of swapping right-back Nelson Semedo for the Manchester City man in the summer.
Cancelo arrived at Manchester City last summer in a player plus cash deal from Juventus that saw Danilo move the other way. However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Portuguese international, who has struggled to displace Kyle Walker as the first-choice right-back in Pep Guardiola’s team.
So far in 2019-20, Cancelo has made just 24 appearances for Manchester City, with only eight of them being starts in the Premier League. With opportunities not forthcoming at Etihad, Barcelona are hoping to capitalize on the situation and sign him up next summer.
Ever since the departure of Dani Alves a few years ago, the right-back slot has been a problem for Barcelona. Nelson Semedo was signed from Benfica, but the Portuguese hasn’t been able to nail down the spot for himself while Sergi Roberto has blown hot and cold in the makeshift role.
So, the Catalans looking at a new right-back makes sense. However, given that they are also looking to bring in a new left-back, along with major reinforcements in the attacking department, where the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Neymar have been linked, spending on a right-back also would stretch their finances.
Moreover, all clubs across Europe are likely to see their spending power diminish due to the coronavirus crisis. And that is the primary reason why Barcelona are exploring the possibility of swapping Semedo to sign Cancelo this summer, as per the report. The Catalans are also trying to engineer a Neymar-Antoine Griezmann swap with PSG.
Guardiola has hinted previously that Cancelo is a long-term signing for Manchester City, but a chance to refresh their squad after a fairly disappointing campaign might make the manager entertain the possibility of a swap.
Cancelo, in his 24 appearances for Manchester City this season, has managed just a goal and an assist. In comparison, Semedo has registered five assists but scored no goals in his 29 matches for Barcelona in 2019-20. It will be interesting to see if the Portuguese full-backs end up swapping clubs ahead of the next season.
