Real Madrid are reportedly ready to lose Gareth Bale for free amid links with Premier League duo Manchester United and Tottenham.
According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, Real Madrid are entertaining the idea of letting Gareth Bale leave for free in the summer transfer window to get him off his books. The Welsh forward is the subject of interest from English rivals Manchester United and Tottenham.
Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in the summer of 2013 and has since endured quite the roller-coaster ride at the Bernabeu. While the 30-year-old has played a part in the success that Los Blancos have enjoyed over the last seven years or so.
However, injuries have curtailed his progress significantly during his time at Real Madrid and the player has also been frustratingly inconsistent in the last couple of season. Such inconsistency nearly led Bale to the exit door at the Spanish club last summer before a transfer to China met with a late scupper.
Subsequently, Zinedine Zidane gave Bale a chance to prove himself, perhaps for the final time. But, Bale has started just 13 games in all competitions so far this season, with a paltry return of 2 goals and 3 assists. Having also been involved in other controversies involving Real Madrid, a summer exit seems to be on the cards. Manchester United and Tottenham are interested, as per The Sun.
Manchester United have been perennially linked with Bale only for a move to never materialise. In fact, it had even been reported that the Red Devils could make a January move for the 30-year-old. As for how the former Tottenham man would fit at the club, United still do not have a natural right winger in the squad.
As a result, the likes of Juan Mata, Daniel James, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira have been deployed on the right flank to little success. To that end, Bale could perhaps, be a solution for Manchester United, although Tottenham also appear to be in the race to sign him.
The interest from Tottenham comes as a bit of a surprise, considering they signed Steven Bergwijn to bolster their attack in the January transfer window. With the arrival of Bergwijn, Jose Mourinho has Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Bergwijn as the options to play out wide.
But, the fact that Bale can play centrally as well could perhaps be the reason why the ex-Manchester United boss is eyeing a move for the Real Madrid outcast. Having said that, both Tottenham and United might be better served to avoid signing Bale, considering his tryst with injuries, although his recent success in the Premier League might just be alluring them to take a chance.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, are ready to let Bale leave on a free transfer in the summer. Los Blancos are aware that with the player’s contract still having over two years left to run, his €17 million per year wages would deter suitors from making a move.
As a result, Real Madrid are looking to get Bale off their books completely in the summer. What now remains to be seen is if Manchester United and Tottenham make a beeline for the player when they have a chance to sign him for free.
