Liverpool are reportedly poised to go head-to-head with Real Madrid in pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic this summer.
According to a report by TransferMarketWeb, Marcelo Brozovic is the subject of interest from a couple of European heavyweights. Liverpool and Real Madrid are set to wage battle in a bid to secure the services of the Inter Milan star in the summer transfer window.
Marcelo Brozovic has made steady progress since joining Inter Milan from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2015. Over the last five years, the Croatian international has established himself as a mainstay in the Nerazzurri’s first-team setup and is now one of the first names on the team sheets.
One of the best holding midfielders in the Serie A at present, Brozovic has turned out 29 times in all competitions for Inter Milan this season, never missing a game when fit and available. His exploits have invariably caught the attention of two of the biggest clubs in the world, with Liverpool and Real Madrid keen on signing him.
Liverpool have one of the most complete squads in all of Europe right now, with Jurgen Klopp completely transforming the fortunes of the club since taking over in 2015. Midfield appears to be in good shape at the moment, but the uncertain future of Georginio Wijnaldum could force the Reds into the transfer market.
Add to it the fact that Adam Lallana appears set for a free transfer in the summer and it is clear that Liverpool could perhaps, do with a midfield addition when the transfer window opens, thereby explaining the interest in Brozovic. The interest from Real Madrid, on the other hand, does not necessarily come as a surprise.
While midfield has been key to Real Madrid’s success this season, it is also crucial to note that Luka Modric is in the twilight of his career. Apart from the Croat, Zinedine Zidane has Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Federico Valverde as the only reliable options at his disposal, with James Rodriguez and Isco being squad players.
Dani Ceballos will return from his loan spell at Arsenal in the summer, but his Real Madrid future is uncertain. Inter Milan star Brozovic could, thus, be a viable target for Real Madrid as an alternative to Casemiro, who has had to shoulder too much burden over the course of this season.
Liverpool and Real Madrid, though, could face an uphill task in their bid to prise Brozovic away from Inter Milan, with the report stressing that Antonio Conte views him as a pivotal part of his squad. In fact, unless Inter Milan surprisingly choose to cash-in on him, the 27-year-old could be set for a new deal at San Siro.
It now remains to be seen if Liverpool or Real Madrid can persuade Brozovic to call time on his spell with Inter Milan. For now, though, it looks like a big ask for either of the European giants to swoop him away from Inter Milan this summer.
