Manchester United reportedly made a contract offer to wantaway PSG star Edinson Cavani but were rebuffed by the 32-year-old, who desires to join Atletico Madrid.

According to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato, as carried by the Mirror, Manchester United’s efforts to try and sign PSG superstar Edinson Cavani have been thwarted as the 32-year-old Uruguayan has rejected a contract offer made by the Red Devils.

Manchester United find themselves in dire straits early in the second half of the campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been left short on options in attack following the injury to star striker Marcus Rashford, who could potentially be out till April.

To that end, Manchester United have been scouring the market for a new centre-forward to boost their attacking ranks. Erling Haaland was a target for the 20-time English champions, but the prolific youngster snubbed a chance to move to Old Trafford in favour of a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.

Since then, a number of names have been mentioned, including Wolves star Raul Jimenez; and Edinson Cavani is the latest to be linked with a transfer to Manchester United. The 32-year-old is in the final six months of his contract with PSG and has made his desire to leave very clear, having seen his game time reduced this term following Mauro Icardi’s arrival.

Earlier in the week, the Uruguayan international handed in a transfer request to try and secure a move away from the French capital club. There has been significant interest in Cavani, with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the hunt, along with Manchester United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea, who have reportedly submitted a loan offer to sign him.

And as per latest report, Manchester United tried to make headway in the race for Cavani’s signature by offering him a bumper deal worth around £10 million-a-year, plus a huge signing-on bonus. However, the 32-year-old is believed to have snubbed the Red Devils as he has his heart set on a move to Atletico Madrid.

The report further adds that Atleti have made a similar contract proposal to Cavani, and have also submitted a formal bid to PSG for the transfer. However, their initial bid has been rejected by the French champions, who are seeking a fee of £20 million for their all-time leading goalscorer.

It is no secret that Manchester United are in urgent need of attacking reinforcements and Cavani, despite his age, would have been a handy stop-gap option for the Red Devils. However, with the Uruguayan rejecting their contract offer, a transfer to Old Trafford seems extremely unlikely at the moment, as the striker is prepared to wait till the summer to secure a move to Atletico.
