Barcelona youngster Moussa Wague has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Premier League outfit Leicester City, who could lose Ricardo Pereira.
As per a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona defender Moussa Wague has caught the eye of Leicester City, who are lining up the youngster as a potential replacement for Ricardo Pereira.
Wague, 21, signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2018 and went on to make his first-team debut in April last year. Since then, the Senegalese full-back has gone on to make five more appearances for the Catalans, three of which have come in the ongoing season.
Despite being rated highly within the Barcelona camp, first-team opportunities have been hard to come by for Wague with Nelson Semedo and Sergi Roberto being ahead of him the pecking order. Moreover, with reports claiming that Barcelona are looking to sign Real Betis right-back Emerson, Wague’s pathway to the senior team will only get harder.
The 21-year-old’s situation has put Leicester City on alert, with the Foxes looking at him as a possible alternative for current first-choice right-back Ricardo Pereira. The Portuguese joined Leicester from Porto in the summer of 2018 and has been very impressive during his time at the King Power.
Pereira was named the club’s Player of the Year for the last season and has continued in the same vein of form this time out as well. This has led to him attracting interest from Leicester City’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
And should Leicester end up losing him in the ongoing transfer window, they are plotting a raid on Barcelona for Wague. The report adds that the Premier League outfit are looking at the possibility of signing the Senegalese international on a loan deal with an option to buy.
Wague does not have a lot of exposure at the topmost level, but the 21-year-old is a full international for Senegal with already 14 caps to his name. The 21-year-old, in his limited opportunities with the Barcelona, has shown glimpses of his abilities, but with regular opportunities not forthcoming a loan move could be the way to go forward.
However, a move to Leicester will largely hinge on whether Pereira stays or moves on to a different club. It will be interesting to see how this story unfolds in the coming weeks.
