Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is reportedly a target for Manchester City and Manchester United, with the Red Devils eyeing a January move for the Englishman.

According to David Ornstein in a published report on The Athletic, Harry Winks is the subject of interest from Manchester United and Manchester City. The Tottenham midfielder is on the radar of the two Manchester clubs, who seem keen to bring Winks over from London.

The report further elaborates that Manchester City want to sign Winks in the summer transfer window. But, Manchester United are looking to seal a deal for the midfielder in January itself, which makes sense considering the urgent need for reinforcements in the midfield area for the club.

Harry Winks is one of the proponents and beneficiaries from Mauricio Pochettino’s time at Tottenham. The midfielder emerged from the academy and Pochettino’s faith in the 23-year-old saw him grow and establish himself as a regular within the first-team setup at the North London club.

Such has been his rise that he is now capped at the senior level for England and even has a goal for the Three Lions. There are signs, though, that Jose Mourinho prefers other options compared to Winks, with the 23-year-old having played just 69 minutes in the last five Premier League matches, although he did miss one of them due to a suspension accrued by accumulating yellow cards.

Manchester United have warped to a certain extent under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The presence of high octane runners in attack combined with technically powerful defenders, the need right now is for midfielders who can not only assert authorities but also provide the creative impetus and find the runs of the attackers.

Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba’s absence have further diminished the options available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who should look to bring in at least one option in midfield to assist Fred, who has really come into his own of late.

For Manchester City, it’s more about preparing for the future. Pep Guardiola likes to have multiple options for each position and Winks with his skillset, is a perfect fit into the Guardiola way. Winks would also boost the English quota, which is an added positive.

While a fee has not been mentioned, Tottenham fans feel a connection with Winks, with the 23-year-old a product of their academy. Whatever be the transfer fee recouped, a departure for Winks would be tough to take for Spurs, who have already lost one of their best managers in the history of the club.
