Manchester United are reportedly considering a January move for former Liverpool star Emre Can, who is out of favour at Juvenuts.

According to a report by Sky Sports, Manchester United are showing an interest in Emre Can over a move in the January transfer window. The former Liverpool midfielder is facing an uncertain future at Juventus after a slow start to life under Maurizio Sarri.

Emre Can spent four productive years at Liverpool before joining Juventus on a free transfer in the summer of 2018. The German international made a fine start to his spell with the Bianconeri, only missing out on two occasions when he was available for selection.

In all competitions, the 25-year-old made 37 appearances, scoring four goals and providing one assist. But, the appointment of Maurizio Sarri as the new Juventus boss has been detrimental to the former Liverpool star’s fortunes. The same was evident in the summer, with the Serie A champions reportedly offering the midfielder to Barcelona.

Fast forward to the early stages of the season, and Can has not started any game so far this season, with the killer blow being his omission from Juve’s Champions League squad. The player’s fall in stature has piqued the interest of Manchester United, who are weighing up a January move.

Manchester United are in dire straits at present, with several departments in desperate need of reinforcements. Midfield, in particular, is an area needs to be addressed urgently, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer choosing not to fill the void created by the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera this year.

Herrera’s exit has especially paved the ways for the absence of an all-action midfielder. Manchester United also lack a capable defensive midfielder, a role that Can has previously excelled in reprising while at Liverpool.

The 25-year-old could, thus, be a solution to their holding midfield woes, thereby allowing Scott McTominay to play in his preferred role of a box-to-box midfielder while providing Paul Pogba with more freedom going forward.

The report suggests that Juventus are likely to command a £35 million transfer fee for Can and are open to the idea of selling him. But, the ex-Liverpool superstar is not a priority for Manchester United currently. United, though, are keenly monitoring his situation and it remains to be seen if they step up their interest in him in the weeks to come.
