Transfer Rumour: Manchester United keen on Francisco Cordova

Manchester United have reportedly developed an interest in Mexican international Francisco Sebastian Cordova, who is currently plying his trade for Club America.

Daily Mail have claimed that there is a new name on the Manchester United shortlist. Club America star Francisco Sebastian Cordova has emerged as a potential target for the struggling Premier League giants, who are scouring for players before a possible transfer splurge on January or in the summer.

Midfield is an area that is a pressing concern for Manchester United. The Red Devils failed to replace the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera within the squad while 2018 summer arrival Fred and veteran Nemanja Matic have failed to really get going under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Paul Pogba’s injury has exposed the midfield even more. But, the number 10 position is a more nagging area. Solskjaer’s decision or not; the choice to go into the season with Andreas Pereira, Jesse Lingard and a fast-ageing Juan Mata as the number 10 options have been the biggest perpetrator of Manchester United’s downfall.

Francisco Sebastian Cordova’s pursuit could kill ‘two birds with one stone’. The Club America star is predominantly a number 10 but has played in central midfield and on the left. While the left side at Manchester United is already crowded, Cordova would be a brilliant addition to Solskjaer’s options in midfield and in the hole.

Cordova may not be a popular name, but it is one that is gaining in stature by the day. Recently capped by the Mexican National Team, Cordova is a key figure at Club America and is highly rated in Mexico. Valued at just £4 million, Cordova represents a bargain, if ever there is one in the current transfer market.

Manchester United’s last recruitment from Mexico – Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez – turned out to be quite a bargain and a hit with the fans. Cordova should also align with Solskjaer’s philosophy of going for players who ‘want’ to play for the badge rather than going for big names.

Whether United convert their interest in Cordova into something genuine is still debatable, with so many options, like James Maddison and Bruno Fernandes, also doing the rounds. One thing is certain; Manchester United need better options in midfield and in the hole, pronto.
