Manchester United are reportedly tracking French forward Moussa Dembele ahead of potential transfer in the January transfer window.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Manchester United sent scouts to watch Moussa Dembele in action for Lyon this past weekend. The Premier League heavyweights are eager to bolster their attack in the January transfer window and have tracked the French forward all through the season.
Moussa Dembele has been one of the brightest young players in Europe over the last few years. The French striker was the leading light for Celtic between 2016 and 2018 and has only gone from strength to strength since making his way to Lyon last year.
In 46 appearances across all competitions last term, Dembele struck 20 goals and he has started this season strongly as well, finding the back of the net 6 times in eight Ligue 1 outings. And, his exploits have earned the 23-year-old an admirer in Manchester United, who were reportedly keen on signing him this past summer.
In fact, there had even been suggestions that Manchester United had made a last-ditch effort to sign the French forward on the British deadline day before a move failed to materialise. And, the continued interest in Dembele makes a great deal of sense.
Manchester United have struggled for goals this season, failing to score more than once in a game since their season opening fixture against Chelsea, nearly two months ago. The Red Devils have, in fact, scored a mere 7 goals from open play in the Premier League in eight games, an alarming number for a club, that seems to be on a steep decline.
Hence, while defence seems to have improved a great extent, Manchester United have evidently taken a big step back in attack, with Marcus Rashford a shell of a player who broke out three years ago. Dembele is, thus, a viable target for English football’s fallen giants to pursue.
To that end, Manchester United have had the player scouted all through the season so far, with their officials present during Lyon’s Ligue 1 meeting with St. Etienne. Dembele was a second half substitute for Les Gones and mustered up the only shot on target for his side in the game.
Manchester United view the French forward as an attractive target, not just due to his goalscoring record, but also because of the fact that Sylvinho’s rotation policy has seen him go in and out of the side so far this term. Should that continue to be the case, United reckon, as per the report, that they could push for a cut-price deal in January.
It now remains to be seen if Manchester United can push for a deal to sign Moussa Dembele in the winter. What does appear to be certain is that the Red Devils are in desperate need of goals and could do with someone like the French striker.
