Arsenal are reportedly desperate to move German superstar Mesut Ozil away from their books and are ready to sanction a January loan move for the playmaker.
According to a report by Daily Mirror, Arsenal are weighing up a possible move to loan Mesut Ozil out in the winter transfer window. The former German international has previously courted interest from Fenerbahce, although no January suitor has been mentioned in the report.
There had understandably been a lot of excitement when Mesut Ozil ended up joining Arsenal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. A then-club record capture, the playmaking superstar had arrived at the Emirates at the peak of his powers and had naturally carried a lot of promise with his advent at the club.
But, over the last six years, Ozil has been unable to hit the heights that he did in the Spanish capital, only showing glimpses of his genius. And, things have gone from bad to worse under the tutelage of Unai Emery, who has not fancied the former German international all that much.
Ozil started just 28 games last term, Arsenal’s first season with Emery in-charge, managing a paltry return of just 6 goals and 3 assists. His predicament has only worsened, with the 30-year-old managing to feature in just two of the nine games that Arsenal have played this season.
The Gunners, for their part, have been actively trying to move the player off their books and were even prepared to sanction a temporary move in the summer. But, Ozil was determined to stay put and has subsequently been unable to improve his situation at the onset of the season.
With the situation not helping any party involved – Ozil is barely featuring while Arsenal have to pay £350,000 per week to a player who is seemingly not in Emery’s plans – something has got to give. And, the North Londoners are hoping to succeed second time around and loan out Ozil in the January transfer window.
In fact, so desperate are the Gunners, that they are even willing to pay part of his wages in order to convince clubs to sign the German superstar on a temporary basis. Previously, Fenerbahce have been linked with a move for Ozil, while there were brief mentions of a shock switch to DC United as well.
But, the identity of a possible January suitor has not been revealed in the report. It now remains to be seen if Arsenal’s decision to pay part of Ozil’s wages, while he is out on loan, convinces clubs to make a move for him at the turn of the year. For now, what remains certain is that the playmaker’s career at the Emirates going nowhere.
