Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that academy product Mason Greenwood is the best finisher within the squad.
Manchester United academy starlet Mason Greenwood is the most natural finisher at the club ahead of senior strikers Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as reported by The Sun.
The 17-year-old Greenwood has been with the Manchester United academy since the age of six and has risen rapidly through the youth ranks, earning rave reviews along the way for his goalscoring prowess. Regarded as one of the brightest prospects at the club, he made his first-team debut in the 3-1 win against PSG in the Champions League earlier this year.
Greenwood featured on three more occasions for Manchester United before the end of the 2018-19 campaign, with Solskjaer handing him his first start in the final Premier League game against Cardiff City. The teenager shone on his full debut, even as United succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.
Greenwood was one of the major positives to come out from Manchester United’s pre-season this summer. The academy graduate featured in all six of Manchester United’s friendly encounters prior to the start of the season, scoring one goal each against Leeds United and Inter Milan. The forward went on to make a substitute appearance in the Red Devils’ season opener against Chelsea.
With Romelu Lukaku joining Inter Milan in the summer, Greenwood is expected to feature much more prominently in the Manchester United first-team this season. Moreover, the 17-year-old is set to be handed a new and improved contract from Manchester United that would see him earn a bumper pay rise on his current wages of £800-a-week.
And issuing a warning to his first-choice forwards Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, manager Solskjaer said that the youngster is a more natural finisher and is waiting in the wings to pounce on his opportunity. Speaking ahead of their encounter against Wolves, he said, “They’ve [Martial and Rashford] still got a way to go because Mason’s more of a natural finisher than them two.”
Greenwood’s finishing abilities were in display in the friendly against Inter, as he scored the only goal of the game with a fine left-footed curler. Given the number of goals he has plundered throughout his youth career, it is natural for the manager and the fans to be excited about the potential that the teenage sensation possesses.
Wonder what Martial and Rashford have to say about the manager’s comments, though.
