Transfer News: Manchester United agree Romelu Lukaku sale to Inter Milan

Manchester United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Inter Milan over the transfer of beleaguered striker Romelu Lukaku.

Sky Italy have claimed that Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan is almost a done deal. The Nerazzurri have struck a verbal agreement with Manchester United over the transfer fee for the Belgian, with paperwork the only formality left before the transfer is considered complete.

Romelu Lukaku’s transfer saga has been the most interesting one this transfer window so far, especially in the last few days. The Belgian was linked heavily with Inter Milan in the beginning. But, Inter had two bids rejected by Manchester United for Lukaku and it seemed they did not have enough resources to meet United’s demand of £75 million.

Juventus entered the race with a bang, offering Paulo Dybala in a swap deal. Manchester United needed a number 10 and took up the opportunity with open hands. But, as it looked like Lukaku’s future would be sorted, Dybala’s wage demands, agent commission and image rights issues were exorbitant and United did not want to cave in to the same to bring in a player whose first priority was not to join Manchester United.

Amidst all this, Lukaku was found training at Anderlecht, with reports that the Belgian had done so without permission from Manchester United. But, it seems Lukaku’s wish for a transfer will finally be granted by Manchester United and Inter Milan.

The latest reports stated that Inter Milan had lodged a bid meeting United’s demands, with €65 million upfront and €13 million in add-ons and bonuses. With Dybala no closer to dropping his demands to a manageable range and in talks with Tottenham, Manchester United have reportedly decided to take up the cash offer for Lukaku from Inter.

It is worth noting that the failed swap deal will naturally have repercussions for Manchester United, who were also in talks with Juventus over a deal for Mario Mandzukic. Now, Manchester United are no closer to getting a midfielder, a number 10 or a striker for the season ahead, with not much time left before the British transfer window slams shut.

The defence has been improved during the current transfer window. But, Manchester United should be looking at adding at least one central midfielder or number 10 to beef up their squad, if they are to realistically go into the season with hopes of being in contention for trophies come May.
