Everton have lodged a sensational £30 million bid for Arsenal attacker Alex Iwobi although the Gunners have reportedly rejected this approach.
Everton have upped their search for a wide attacker after being rejected for several approaches made on numerous targets. According to London based journalist James Benge, Everton have switched their attention towards Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi by lodging a £30 million bid for the Arsenal attacker.
The journalist also suggests Arsenal have rejected this offer from Everton, although Benge believes it may not be the end of the story. Everton are now expected to come back with an improved offer as they will try to sign the Nigerian before the transfer deadline. Arsenal are expected snub any further offers from the Goodison Park outfit.
Everton’s decision to pursue Iwobi comes after their pursuit of various wingers during this window that failed. At first, Marco Silva’s side sought Malcom, who later signed for Zenit. Then they were on the trails of Crystal Palace’ Wilfried Zaha who has been open to a move. Zaha was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
Arsenal effectively ended their interest in Zaha after they signed Nicolas Pepe in a club-record deal from Lille sometime back. That left Everton a chance to pursue Zaha’s signature. However, after seeing their first few offers for the Ivorian rejected, their reported latest bid of £70 million-plus two players was thought to be enough. Palace rejected that massive offer, forcing Everton to look elsewhere.
With Pepe in the side, there is a feeling it might hamper Iwobi’s chances of playing regularly this season. However, Iwobi was one of the key members of Unai Emery’s reign last season making 51 appearances in all competitions, more than any other outfield player for the club. The fact that Arsenal rejected their initial offer has reportedly nothing to do with the money offered as they value the player.
Emery reportedly does not want Iwobi to leave and sees a great season ahead with the Nigerian. Despite Pepe’s arrival, there is enough room in the team for someone like Iwobi.
As for Everton, they are said to be readying a new offer for Iwobi and would want to complete a deal before the transfer deadline tomorrow. How this story pans out is anyone’s guess. For now, Arsenal are clear they want to keep Iwobi. However, a late twist could be expected, especially if Arsenal would need to raise money to sign a much needed central defender.
