Manchester United are considering making a move for Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen after cooling their interest in Bruno Fernandes.
Manchester United have sprung to life late in the transfer window as they look to finalise a few key deals before the deadline day. According to The Mail, Manchester United are now interested in signing Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen before the window closes. The pursuit of Eriksen has become a priority after United cooled their interest in Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes.
There have been dramatic ends to transfer windows before, and this summer’s edition is shaping towards another such climax. Manchester United are at the forefront of this, with their need for a playmaker before the end of the window. After cooling their interest in Fernandes, who they have pursued all summer, the club wants to sign Tottenham’s Eriksen.
Fernandes was close to signing for United, though now that they are out of the running, Tottenham are trying to swoop in for the Portuguese playmaker. Spurs have so far submitted an offer of £40 million for Fernandes, which was rejected by Sporting. Spurs are expected to make an improved offer as his departure from Sporting is expected before the window shuts.
Eriksen, on the other hand, looks destined to leave Spurs this summer after entering the final year of his deal. Real Madrid were long expected to make a move for the Danish star. However, they have recently switched their attention towards Ajax man Donny van de Beek as the Dutch playmaker represents a cheaper alternative.
United will be hoping to convince Daniel Levy to let go of Eriksen for a price much less than his original demands of £80 million. That could be unlikely given Levy’s track record of driving a hard bargain. As things stand, United will nevertheless join the hunt for Eriksen and try to bring the attacker before the start of the season.
United recently agreed to a world-record move for Harry Maguire from Leicester and want to follow up on the signing to end the transfer window with good players. Their pursuit of Fernandes has reportedly gone cold because they largely viewed the Portuguese as a replacement for Paul Pogba. However, they don’t seem ready to meet the Frenchman’s asking price.
Eriksen too has reportedly made it clear he wishes to leave the club. While so far he has not shown the slightest intention about a move being all about money, he’s stuck to keeping it as footballing reasons. However, with a move to Real Madrid looking bleak, it remains to be seen if he would be willing to move to Manchester United and swap Champions League for Europa League football
There is no doubt United are a big club compared to Tottenham, and this could be a significant factor for Eriksen to make the transfer. It remains to be seen if United are serious about their intentions and are willing to match Levy’s asking price, whatever that may be. Eriksen might very well be a fantastic signing for United, although the complications involved could derail a move.
