Manchester United have reportedly been advised by Sir Alex Ferguson to sign John McGinn, who is valued at £50 million by Aston Villa.

If the report by The Sun is to be believed, Manchester United are being pushed by one of their former managers to poach newly-promoted Aston Villa. Sir Alex Ferguson has advocated for compatriot John McGinn, who has a £50 million price tag.

John McGinn has been in England for just one year. But, in that year, the 24-year-old made quite a smooth transition from Scottish football, having played a key role in Aston Villa’s shock Premier League promotion clinching campaign.

A mainstay in midfield for the Villans, the player made 44 appearances across all competitions, with a return of 7 goals and 10 assists. And, his performances seem to have caught the eye of Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Sun suggest that Sir Alex is a close friend of McGinn’s grandfather and the duo’s relationship is paving the way for the 77-year-old to advise Manchester United to sign McGinn. However, in addition to the aforementioned, the former Manchester United manager has also been left impressed by the player’s ability and energy.

Manchester United have been in the market for a midfielder this summer following the departure of Ander Herrera. The Red Devils’ primary target is reportedly Bruno Fernandes. But, in McGinn, United could have a more like-for-like replacement for Herrera.

A tenacious presence in the middle of the park, the 24-year-old has a more defensively adept style of play than Bruno Fernandes. And, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showing a preference for the 4-2-3-1 formation in the pre-season campaign, McGinn could be just the solution Manchester United need at a time when Nemanja Matic is regressing at an exponential rate.

Reports have even suggested that the Manchester United boss has had his eyes set on the Scottish international. And, with the influential Sir Alex Ferguson possibly lobbying for him, McGinn might just be on his way to Old Trafford this summer.

However, with Aston Villa valuing him at £50 million, it will be interesting to see if the Premier League heavyweights are willing to shell out the asking price. It now remains to be seen if Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice is paid heed to, with John McGinn possibly set to become a key target.
