Arsenal are reportedly lining up a summer move for German midfielder Sami Khedira, who could be sold by Serie A champions Juventus.
As per a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Premier League heavyweights Arsenal are plotting a raid on Serie A champions Juventus in order to sign German midfielder Sami Khedira in the ongoing transfer window.
Khedira, 32, has been with Juventus for four years now, having arrived on a free transfer from Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2015. The midfielder has racked up 127 appearances for the Bianconeri, in which he has scored 21 times and assisted 13 goals, winning the Serie A title in each of his four seasons at the club.
However, after an active summer transfer window during which Juventus have made major reinforcements, the Italian champions are looking to offload players in order to balance the books and Khedira could turn out to be one of the casualties of the operation.
Juventus boast a wealth of options in the midfield department, which has been further bolstered by the summer arrivals of Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot. So, it makes sense that they are looking to make some room within the squad by selling Khedira, who endured a troubled 2018-19 season, during which he played only 17 times.
Khedira’s potential availability has piqued the interest of Unai Emery’s Arsenal. The Gunners have had an eventful week in the transfer market, having confirmed the signings of Dani Ceballos (loan) and William Saliba (loaned out to St. Etienne). They are also reportedly closing in on the signing of Nicolas Pepe, having reached an agreement with Lille.
Now, Arsenal seem to be turning their attention towards bolstering their midfield department with the addition of Khedira. Emery has Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi at his disposal to operate in the deep midfield roles. Mohamed Elneny though, could be on his way out of the club.
Moreover, with Laurent Koscielny looking to force a move away, Arsenal would lose a leader in the dressing room and on the field. And adding someone as experienced and proven as Khedira could address that issue, along with the fact that he would bring a winning mentality to the squad.
Khedira is contracted with Juventus till 2021, with an option to extend it by another year. With the Bianconeri open to a sale, Arsenal could look to sign the midfielder on a bargain. However, they will have to face stiff competition from Fiorentina and Valencia, who also are interested in the German.
