Barcelona are reportedly set to complete a €120 million deal to sign French international Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.
According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Barcelona are on the verge of completing the signing of Antoine Griezmann. The Blaugrana will secure the services of the French international from fellow La Liga club Atletico Madrid after his €120 million release clause comes into effect on July 1.
Antoine Griezmann has been one of the shining stars in Spanish football, having first risen through the ranks at Real Sociedad before establishing himself as a bonafide superstar at Atletico Madrid. The Frenchman has also done wonders at international level, with Les Bleus winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup, while the player also won the Golden Boot at the 2016 UEFA Euro.
As for the numbers at club level, Griezmann has 133 goals and 50 assists in 257 appearances for the Colchoneros. But, his future at Wanda Metropolitano is non-existent following his announcement to confirm that he will be leaving Atletico Madrid this summer. And, his situation has alerted Barcelona.
The La Liga champions had been keen on signing the French international last summer as well before he announced his decision to stay at Atletico Madrid through an infamous documentary. But, with the 28-year-old set to be available this summer, Barcelona have revisited their interest in him.
On paper, it appears as if Barcelona do not really need to sign a player like Griezmann, seeing as they already boast the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Malcom in addition to the ever-present Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. But, for one reason or another, the aforementioned trio have not really managed to cut it at Camp Nou.
Additionally, with inconsistency starting to creep into the game of Suarez, who does not have an able backup, the need to bolster attack is imperative for Barcelona. As a result, Griezmann is a viable target who can be a solution for different positions in attack while also stepping in for Suarez as and when required.
The impending status of the French international’s move to Barcelona had also been confirmed by Atletico Madrid CEO Gil Marin. And, as per Daily Telegraph, the deal could be completed early into July, with Griezmann’s €120 million release clause set to come into effect at the start of the month.
The suggestions come in contradiction to Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu’s recent comments insisting that there are no agreements in place with Griezmann for a move just yet. But, if the move does get completed, it will be interesting to see where that puts Neymar, who has been linked recently with a return to Camp Nou.
The report claims that will only be possible if they move on a few players, which indeed is the ideal solution. For now though, as far as Griezmann it looks like it is only a matter of time before he makes the €120 million switch to Barcelona.
