Manchester United are showing interest in Giovani Lo Celso and have emerged favourites to beat Tottenham for the Argentine midfielder’s signature.

Manchester United and Tottenham are looking for new midfielders in the current window to fill necessary voids in their squads. Both teams are linked away with many players, but Manchester United might take the march on a common target. Publication I-News are reporting the Red Devils are set to beat Spurs for the signing of Real Betis’ in-demand midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

Manchester United are actively looking to strengthen their squad in the summer window, and Lo Celso has emerged as a significant target for the Premier League side. The Argentine midfielder has been in sensational form with Real Betis this season and appeared on the radar of several big clubs including Tottenham.

Betis only signed him on loan at the start of the season. Owing to his performances in La Liga, Betis signed Lo Celso permanently from parent club Paris Saint-Germain. He is a technically gifted player and Betis, despite only signing him recently are ready to cash in on the midfielder for a massive profit.

Lo Celso has a staggering £89 million release clause on his contract although Betis are ready to business for a reported £67 million. Tottenham are thought to be the early bidders with a reported £53 million offer which was rejected by Betis. The report also suggested that Betis official had travelled to England, thus fuelling speculation that Man Utd are now the favourites for the midfielder.

Manchester United lost a few midfielders in recent months. Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera have both left the clubs in January and June respectively. Additionally, star midfielder Paul Pogba’s future remains a significant doubt, meaning United certainly need to sign a technically sound midfielder. However, an inflated price tag could force them to look elsewhere such as Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff.

Lo Celso ended his season with 16 goals and 6 assists in all competitions. His particular skill in making runs from deep as well as getting in goalscoring positions have attracted the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Tottenham, on the other hand, are still very much in the hunt for the Argentina International.

Lo Celso is also understood to prefer Tottenham over other suitors Manchester United, for the player wants to play under Mauricio Pochettino. The issue comes from Spurs’ Chairman Daniel Levy, who does not want to pay up big transfer fees, although Pochettino is understood to have asked the club to bring the midfielder to North London.

Lo Celso is showing excellent quality in his game and has a long future ahead of him. His performances might come in to justify the hefty price tag on his head, but it will be exciting to watch where he ends up. Both Manchester United and Spurs represent an excellent destination for Lo Celso, and he certainly might shine at either club.
