Liverpool have reportedly been warned off Czech international Jiri Pavlenka by Werder Bremen in their pursuit to sign him as backup to Alisson.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, who have quoted Frank Bauman’s interview with Weser-Kurier, Liverpool have received a setback in their pursuit to sign Jiri Pavlenka in the summer transfer window. The Czech international, who is being eyed as a possible backup for Alisson, will not be allowed to leave Werder Bremen this summer.

Liverpool are fresh off their stirring UEFA Champions League triumph last week, as they became champions of Europe for an English-record sixth time. But, Jurgen Klopp is now keen on ironing out all the subtle issues that stand in his way of creating a truly formidable squad. One such issue pertains to the goalkeeping department.

Alisson Becker has been a truly great addition to the Liverpool first-team setup, with the Brazilian playing a huge role in what was a successful season. In just a season in England, Alisson has also gone on to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers on show in the Premier League.

But, while it wasn’t exactly necessary to depend on his backup, Simon Mignolet over the course of the season, the fact that he appears set to leave in search of first-team football is a concern for Liverpool. With Loris Karius still having a year on his loan deal with Besiktas, Jurgen Klopp would be in need of a backup for Alisson.

To that end, the Reds seem to have turned their attention towards Jiri Pavlenka, in order to sign a quality backup option for Alisson. The Czech international has been with Werder Bremen since the summer of 2017, and he has since been an ever-present in their first-team setup.

In fact, over the last two seasons, the 27-year-old has not missed a single game of a season for Werder, thus suggesting just how important a figure he is at the club. But, his solid performances have also caught the eye of Liverpool, as per the report.

Daily Mirror also claim that the Merseyside club are also prepared to offer Karius as part of a deal to sign Pavlenka. But, Werder Bremen sporting director Frank Bauman has warned off his suitors and that of other regulars in the first-team setup at Weser Stadium in an interview with Weser-Kurier.

“We plan with Pavlenka for the new season. There is no offer from Juventus or Liverpool for Jiri Pavlenka. It remains true that we do not want to sell any of our regular players.”

With Pavlenka also having to leave his role as a regular to play second fiddle to Alisson, it might have been difficult anyway for Liverpool to swoop him away from Werder Bremen. But, Bauman’s hands off warning might just do the trick as well.

Liverpool must now turn their attention elsewhere in their bid to sign a backup option for Alisson Becker, and so must Juventus, who had also been eyeing Pavlenka for a summer move.
