Manchester United have reportedly offered soon-to-be free agent Adrien Rabiot a contract worth a staggering £170,000-a-week in wages.
As per a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester United have put forth a bumper contract offer for PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who will be out of contract later this month. The Red Devils are interested in signing the Frenchman on a free transfer and have offered him a contract worth £170,000-a-week.
Rabiot has been with PSG since 2010 and went on to make his first-team debut in 2012 under then manager Carlo Ancelotti. Till date the midfielder has featured 227 times for Les Parisiens, bagging 24 goals and setting up 17 more, winning six Ligue 1 titles in the process.
However, the 24-year-old has not played a single game for PSG since December after he refused to put pen to a new contract with the French champions. The midfielder was then suspended by the club after he was spotted partying post PSG’s Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United.
Rabiot’s situation had seen him gather interest from a number of top clubs across Europe. Real Madrid were believed to keen on signing the 24-year-old Frenchman this summer, with reports even claiming that the two parties had an agreement in place for a summer move.
However, it is Manchester United that have emerged as favourites to land Rabiot in recent weeks. The Red Devils, after a poor 2018-19 campaign, are eyeing a major rebuild with midfield being a key area that needs reinforcement heading into the next season.
Manchester United will be losing Ander Herrera this summer with his contract set to expire, while Paul Pogba’s future is also far from certain, amid strong interest from Real Madrid. With Fred and Nemanja Matic also underperforming over the course of the last season, a new central midfielder would be a welcome addition.
Rabiot, despite having not played for six months, is a quality operator with immense potential. At a young age, the six-time capped Frenchman has gained a lot of experience at the top level and will only get better from hereon. Moreover, he will be available for nothing, making him a highly-attractive prospect for Manchester United.
And in order to ensure that they do not lose out to his other suitors, Manchester United have already tabled a contract offer worth around £9 million-a-year with a £4.5 million signing-on bonus for Rabiot.
The midfielder is tempted by the mega deal, according to the report, but harbours hopes of joining Liverpool instead. A huge admirer of Reds’ legend Steven Gerrard, Rabiot is also drawn to the Merseysiders given that they will be offering Champions League football, while Manchester United will be playing in the Europa League.
Rabiot is certain to leave PSG this summer, but it remains to be seen if he ends up joining Manchester United or if they get beaten to the punch by some other club.
