Transfer News: Barcelona tracking Wolfsburg left-back Jerome Roussillon

Jerome Roussillon is reportedly drawing interest from La Liga, with the Wolfsburg left-back emerging as a summer target for Barcelona.

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Jerome Roussillon has emerged as an option for Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The Wolfsburg left-back has been linked with a potential move to the Spanish champions, who are looking to reinforce their squad this summer.

The report states that Barcelona had no prior intentions of scouting Roussillon. But, in their scouting mission to gather more information on Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels, who has been previously linked to Barcelona, the left-back caught their attention with his pace and attacking guile.

Jerome Roussillon arrived in the Bundesliga in 2018, having previously spent his entire footballing career in France. Wolfsburg though, seemed to have already found more value than what they paid to sign the left-back from Montpellier. In his maiden season in Germany, Roussillon has proven to be an amazing addition going forward, with a return of 3 goals and 6 assists in the league alone.

One of the key players for Wolfsburg in the 2018-19 campaign, the left-back is now drawing interest from Barcelona, with the report stating that current Director of Football at Barcelona, Eric Abidal, had taken note of Roussillon’s potential during the player’s time at Montpellier itself.

Barcelona have Jordi Alba, who has been the undisputed first-choice at Nou Camp for a fair number of years. But, the Barcelona superstar’s performances have seen a steady and consistent dip over the years, with the club looking to bring in a player to challenge Alba for the left-back position, which could in turn reignite the fire within the player.

Alternatively, bringing in an in-form player like Roussillon would also ensure Barcelona are not left without options, should Alba underperform or be unavailable due to injury or otherwise.

Roussillon is an attacking left-back with bags of pace. His attacking contribution outweighs his defensive acumen, something he seems to have in common with current first-choice at Barcelona, Jordi Alba. While the 26-year-old could be a good addition, in general, to Barcelona’s squad, the club should ideally look for a left-back who is a better defender, especially after the recent failures in defence.

It will be interesting to see how Barcelona go about their business in the summer transfer window. Should the Catalan giants opt to go for a player a-la Jordi Alba, we could very well see Roussillon heading to Spain.
