Transfer Rumour: Liverpool keen on Leeds United prospect Leif Davis

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Leif Davis and are considering a summer move for the Leeds United youngster as a backup for Andrew Robertson.

According to The Sun, Liverpool seem to have locked their sights on a backup for Andrew Robertson for the left side of the defence. The Reds have identified Leeds United starlet Leif Davis as an option for the summer and are scouting the player before making a move for the defender, who is also drawing interest from Bournemouth.

The report iterates that Liverpool are eyeing Davis as a replacement for Alberto Moreno, who is set to leave Anfield this summer and become a free agent, with his contract up for expiry. But, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is an admirer of Davis and will be looking to nurture the young talent, should he stay put at Elland Road beyond the summer.

Leif Davis has had an interesting last 12 months or so. Arriving at Leeds from League Two outfit Morecambe last summer, the youngster was never expected to be a member of the first-team in his maiden season at Elland Road. But, Leeds’ injury problems in defence meant Davis ended up with five senior appearances by the end of the season, four of which came in the Championship.

That the youngster impressed in his outings and Leeds won all four of the Championship matches that the 18-year-old featured in has further added to the left-back’s stock.

Davis is now drawing interest from Liverpool and Bournemouth, both of whom will be able to provide Premier League football, something Leeds United missed out on after their dismal performances towards the end of the Championship campaign that culminated into an exit in the playoff semi-finals at the hands of Derby County.

While Liverpool’s interest has already been explained, a part of their desire to land Davis could emerge from the success of Andrew Robertson at Anfield, who also came from a Championship club for a fee that has proven to be a bargain deal. Also, the Reds could do with a young star, who will not want regular first-team football from the get-go at Anfield.

Bournemouth have silently built a reputation of nurturing promising talents over the last couple of years in the Premier League. Charlie Daniels was the first-choice at the club. But, the defender is now 32 and is set to undergo knee surgery, which is likely to mean a lot of time on the sidelines. Diego Rico has been impressive, but Eddie Howe will want a healthy competition at left-back.

Davis is currently rated at £4 million, but Leeds are unlikely to allow the 18-year-old to leave at the said price range. The iconic club will look to hold on to Davis, who will be elated that his talent is drawing interest from Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Bournemouth.
