Transfer News: Manchester United plot bumper contract extension for Marcus Rashford

Manchester United are keen to secure Marcus Rashford’s long-term future at the club by offering him a whopping £300,000 a week contract extension.

According to Daily Star, Manchester United are plotting a bumper contract extension for Marcus Rashford. The English international’s current contract at the club expires at the end of next season. But, the Red Devils are keen to secure his long-term future at the club by offering him a five-year extension worth £300,000 a week.

Rashford earns around £75,000 per week in his current contract, but the new contract extension will see his wages increase more than three times. It will also make him the second highest paid player for Manchester United, right after last year’s recruit Alexis Sanchez. The ex-Arsenal forward reportedly bags £500,000 a week.

From a sporting perspective, the deal would make sense for many reasons. United have struggled with their lack of productivity in the attacking department for the past few years.

The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial have all shown lack of consistency while Sanchez has failed to make an impression in the first-team since arriving at Old-Trafford last year. As a result, the Red Devils have appeared over-reliant on the services of young Rashford.

The 21-year-old was in a great run of form following the arrival of Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer. In fact, the forward was involved in as many as eight goals in Ole’s first eight league games in charge of United.

Since early February, however, Rashford has scored just one league goal, which will be a worrying sign for Solskjaer ahead of the start of the new campaign. The fact that both Rashford and Lukaku are struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis accentuates the need for a new attacker this summer. And this raises doubts as to whether or not should United invest so heavily in securing the long-term future of Rashford.

Although, financial resources haven’t historically been a problem for United, Solskjaer’s apparent plan of undergoing a squad overhaul this summer could financially cripple them in the long run. And this problem could further escalate should they offer such a bumper extension to a player, who hasn’t been at his best form, of late.

At the same time, Rashford has been an essential part of the United attack for the past couple of years. And despite his lack of form, the 21-year-old will be able to offer pace and dynamism in the offence next season. Hence, it will be imperative for the Red Devils to extend the contract of this hugely talented English forward.

A lot, however, will depend on how many players United plan to sell in the ongoing transfer market. Paul Pogba, for one, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer and it will be interesting to see what transpires in the coming weeks.
