Real Madrid have reportedly reached verbal agreement with Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen over a move this summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid have an agreement in place with Christian Eriksen over a move in the summer transfer window. The Spanish heavyweights are also in talks with Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur to seek a transfer fee that both clubs can comply with.
Christian Eriksen is perhaps the only player that Tottenham struck gold on from the riches procured from the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. Since, arriving on a low-money deal at White Hard Lane, the Danish playmaker has grown considerably, establishing himself as one of the best players on show in the Premier League.
The last six years have seen the 27-year-old become an indispensable figure for both club and country, amassing 273 appearances for Tottenham, with a solid return of 65 goals and 86 assists to show for his efforts. But, over the course of this season, there have been serious concerns over the future of Eriksen at the North London club.
The player has a little over one year remaining on his current deal with Spurs and has been urged by Mauricio Pochettino to commit his future to the club by penning a new deal. But, his head seems to have been turned by the interest from Real Madrid.
Los Blancos have endured a season to forget, with less than a handful of players managing to deliver on a consistent basis. Midfield though, has become an area of concern for Real Madrid, with Luka Modric showing signs of age catching up and Toni Kroos regressing spectacularly over the last 18 months or so.
Finding a long-term successor to Modric is thus, understandably a priority for Real Madrid, who seem to have zeroed in on Eriksen to be this replacement. With the star playmaker refusing to put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with Tottenham due to differences in acceptable terms, the La Liga giants have the perfect opportunity to swoop him away to the Spanish capital.
The report suggests that Real Madrid have indeed made use of this opportunity to reach verbal agreement with Eriksen and his representatives over a move in the summer transfer window. However, AS do not specify the pay package that the two parties have agreed upon.
Los Merengues have now turned their attention towards coming to terms with Tottenham over a fee and it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached between the two clubs. For now, it looks like Christian Eriksen’s future is set to be as a Real Madrid player, lest Spurs risk him running down his contract by keeping him beyond the summer.
