Barcelona are reportedly keen to bring back Marc Cucurella and are set to exercise the buyback option embedded in his contract to sign the on-loan Eibar star in the summer.
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have speculated that Barcelona might be about to bring back one of their academy graduates. Marc Cucurella’s spell at Eibar has impressed the hierarchy at the Catalan club, who are now set to activate the buyback option in the youngster’s contract.
The report states that Eibar are looking to activate their option to buy Cucurella for €2 million. If it happens, Barcelona will exercise the buyback option that stands at €4 million and bring Cucurella back in the summer transfer window itself.
But, there is still uncertainty as to the motive behind the move; whether the club will use Cucurella as a competitor for Jordi Alba or will look to earn some profit on the entire transaction.
Marc Cucurella was one of the players touted to be in the first-team setup at Barcelona. But, the Catalan giants allowed the youngster to move to Eibar on a season-long loan in the summer of 2018. At Eibar, the youngster has established himself as a prospect worth tracking, with 28 La Liga appearances as Eibar pieced together another formidable campaign in the Spanish top-flight.
Now, having impressed on his loan spell so far, Eibar look to make the signing permanent in a bid to strengthen their defence. The buy options stands at a meek €2 million, which is a bargain for a player like Cucurella, who has already proven himself to be more than suitable to the footballing system that operates on the field for Eibar.
But, Barcelona have also taken note of the youngster’s talent and performances. The Catalan giants seem to have realised their mistake of inserting such a low buy option, if at all, in the loan deal. But, in case Eibar end up making the loan deal permanent, Barcelona will look to bring Cucurella back in the summer transfer window itself by exercising the potential buyback option that will stand at €4 million.
Barcelona are short of options on the extreme left side of their back four. There are no options beyond Jordi Alba, with Barcelona scouring several different names to potentially act as Alba’s challenger for the starting spot or as a rotation option for Ernesto Valverde.
The report though, states that Barcelona are still unsure whether Cucurella will be used in the first-team or if the 20-year-old will be sold subsequently to a new club for profit, if any suitors come knocking at their door. An interesting summer ahead for Cucurella.
