Transfer Rumour: Manchester United plotting summer move for Joao Cancelo

Portuguese international Joao Cancelo is reportedly a €40 million summer target for Manchester United, who are in the market for a right-back.

According to a report by TransferMarketWeb, Manchester United have set their sights on Juventus defender Joao Cancelo. The Premier League heavyweights will have to fork out around €40 million if they are to land the Portuguese international in the summer transfer window.

Joao Cancelo has been a player reborn in Italian football, having first enjoyed a solid campaign while on-loan at Inter Milan from Valencia last season. The Portuguese full-back has only grown in stature upon making his way to Juventus last summer as part of a €40 million move.

While he hasn’t exactly been a firm first-choice right-back for the Bianconeri, the player has managed to carve out a place for himself in the first-team setup on the back of some important performances. But, it has been mentioned that Juventus are not averse to the idea of selling Cancelo, just one year after he joined the club. Manchester United are keen on signing the 24-year-old.

In what has been a forgettable season for Manchester United, the right-back slot is one that has posed a lot of concerns. The campaign started with Antonio Valencia being at the top of the pecking order for the position before his erratic displays saw him tumble down, while injury troubles have had their impact as well.

With the Ecuadorian now on the periphery, the culmination of a decade-long stint with Manchester United is nearing. Valencia though, is not the only player who has put both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a spot of bother.

Ashley Young has become progressively poorer upon becoming a regular right-back for the Red Devils this term, having made a number of game-changing errors of late. The only other option that has been used by the two managers so far is Diogo Dalot, who is seen as one for the future, but also has a lot of growing to do.

With Dalot likely to have his fair share of weaknesses next season as well, turning to someone like Joao Cancelo makes sense for Manchester United. And, with Juventus open to the idea of parting ways with the Portuguese international, as per the report, a move could well be in the offing.

In order to swoop him away from the Allianz Stadium, however, the Premier League heavyweights will have to shell out €40 million, which is not too high going by the current market standards. At such an amount, Cancelo would represent a great deal, considering his adeptness at both ends of the pitch.

It now remains to be seen if a move to Manchester United sees the light of the day for Joao Cancelo, who could be placed on the transfer list by Juventus, with Mattia de Sciglio also impressing this season.
