Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a mega money summer swoop for Italian international Lorenzo Insigne as they look to rebuild for next season.
According to a report from Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, as carried by The Sun, Manchester United are looking at Napoli superstar Lorenzo Insigne as a possible candidate to bolster their attack next season and are plotting a whopping £86 million swoop for the Italian forward.
It has been a season to forget for Manchester United. In what has been quite a disastrous campaign, the Red Devils have broken a number unwanted records and find themselves slowly going out of the running for a top four finish in the Premier League.
The squad that had looked rejuvenated since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over after the toxic Jose Mourinho era, has been unable to perform consistently enough, leading to seven defeats in their last nine matches. Solskjaer has hinted that he wants to revamp his squad come summer and a new forward is likely to be high on the Norwegian’s shopping list.
Romelu Lukaku has struggled to live up to the expectations and consistently goes missing in the big games, while Marcus Rashford has shown his game still needs a bit polishing for him to be considered an elite marksman. Anthony Martial’s form has nosedived since he signed a new deal, while the lesser said about Alexis Sanchez the better.
The Chilean is very much likely to be sold in the summer and Lukaku could also follow him out of Old Trafford, meaning Manchester United will need fresh additions to their attacking contingent, leading to their supposed interest in Insigne.
The 27-year-old came through the youth ranks at Napoli and has gone on to establish himself as a key component in the team that has been the second-best in Italy behind serial winners Juventus. Insigne has made over 300 appearances for the Partenopei, scoring 76 goals and setting up 70 more in the process.
Able to play on the left-flank as well as in a central role, the 30-time capped Italian international is a skilled dribbler and expert finisher, who thrives on cutting in from the wide areas and have a go at the goal. Entering the peak years of his career, Insigne has plenty of experience at the top level as well.
Insigne has three years left on his current contract with Napoli, but has claimed previously that he would be open to an exit should a good offer come along. Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis is also willing to cash in on the forward, as per the report, meaning an exit could be possible should Manchester United come up with an enticing offer.
Insigne has been one of the best attackers going around in Serie A for the past few seasons and has shown the ability to score and create in good numbers consistently, while also exhibiting his leadership qualities after being named club captain this term. But, it remains to be seen if Manchester United act on the reported interest in the 27-year-old.
