Transfer News: Manchester United open to selling Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Belgian centre-forward Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window.

Daily Telegraph have reported that Romelu Lukaku could be playing in his final season for Manchester United. The Premier League heavyweights are open to the idea of letting go of the star centre-forward, with the likes of Bayern Munich, PSG and Inter Milan interested in signing him in the summer transfer window.

Romelu Lukaku joined Manchester United from Everton in a mega-money deal in the summer of 2017. While he has made some important contributions to the team’s cause over the last couple of years, there have been several spurts of goal droughts that have left him as a figure of frustration.

With consistent goalscoring being a pertinent problem for Manchester United, the fact that the centre-forward has blown hot and cold is far from ideal. But, that has also ensured that Marcus Rashford has usurped Lukaku as the first-choice striker for the Premier League heavyweights.

In recent months, Lukaku’s drop in stature and inconsistencies have given way to speculation surrounding his future, with widespread reports claiming that Manchester United could be open to the idea of cashing in on the Belgian international. And, Daily Telegraph seem to corroborate that.

The report states that the Red Devils are willing to listen to offers for the 25-year-old, with a number of top clubs across Europe – Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and PSG – showing interest in him.

The interest from Bayern Munich comes as a bit of a surprise, even though Robert Lewandowski is now 30. While Lukaku could ideally be a long-term successor for the Pole, it is unlikely that he could become the first-choice centre-forward at the Allianz Arena straightaway.

At Inter, the uncertain future of Mauro Icardi, who has coincidentally been linked with Manchester United, makes Lukaku a viable target, who could be a like-for-like replacement for the Argentine. At PSG meanwhile, the Belgian striker will be in a similar predicament as at Bayern, with Edinson Cavani being the first-choice at the present moment.

Wherever his future lies, it looks like Romelu Lukaku’s place at Manchester United is not fixed for the coming season. But, there are a couple of hurdles in United’s way of selling the star striker, as his £225,000-a-week wages will be hard to match at other clubs.

Furthermore, with Manchester United looking to recoup the sum they paid to sign the 25-year-old two years ago, it will be interesting to see if their demands are met. Either way, Lukaku’s future at Old Trafford will surely be up for discussion in the summer, as per his agent, and it remains to be seen if he indeed ends up leaving the Premier League club.
