Manchester United are reportedly looking to seal the £25 million deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur superstar Toby Alderweireld in the summer.
According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United have rekindled their interest in Toby Alderweireld. The Premier League heavyweights are set to trigger the £25 million release clause in the Tottenham Hotspur superstar’s contract, which will come into effect when the summer transfer window opens.
Alderweireld has played a key role in the Tottenham resurgence in recent years, having been one of the pillars on which Spurs have built a stable squad. But, over the past 12 months or so, the player’s future has been in disrepute, due to his reluctance to commit his future to the North Londoners.
As a result, the experienced defender has been heavily linked with a move away from the Premier League heavyweights for well over a year now. And, Manchester United, in particular, have reportedly been the club hot on his heels, having also failed to snap him up last summer.
The central defensive unit has been a cause for concern for Manchester United for quite some time now, with the backline being quite porous this term – the Red Devils have shipped in a staggering 43 goals so far in the Premier League. And so, it is understandable that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to bolster the heart of the defence.
Victor Lindelof is the only centre-back who has managed to perform consistently over the course of this season. The likes of Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have either not been fit for long periods or have blown hot and cold, which has only compounded Manchester United’s problems.
To that end, pursuing Alderweireld makes sense, as the Belgian international has years of experience in the Premier League and is at the peak of his powers. And, the 30-year-old will be available for a mere £25 million in the summer, with Tottenham triggering their option to extend his deal by 12 months.
The price tag, coupled with his experience all make Alderweireld an appealing target for Manchester United, who are set to take up the option of paying his release clause £25 million. The Red Devils are yet to establish contact with Spurs over the player, although they only need to be willing to activate the clause.
What they do need is for Alderweireld to be open to making his way to Old Trafford, and it now remains to be seen how things pan out in the summer, as the Belgian defender nears the end of his time with Tottenham.
