Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is reportedly demanding £200,000-a-week in wages to sign a new contract, as Paris Saint-Germain lurk.
As per a report from the Mirror, Manchester United are facing the risk of losing midfield mainstay Ander Herrera for nothing in the summer transfer window to French champions PSG, unless they meet his wage demands of £200,000 per week.
Herrera is in his fifth season with Manchester United, having arrived at the club in the summer of 2014 from Athletic Bilbao. The 29-year-old has accumulated 187 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 20 goals and setting up 27 more, on his way to winning an FA Cup, an EFL Cup and a UEFA Europa League trophy.
Having been named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season, Herrera has established himself as a key man in the team under current boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. However, his contract situation has cast clouds of uncertainty over his future with the 20-time English champions.
Herrera is in the final few months of his contract with Manchester United and could be on his way out of the club when the deal runs out at the end of the season. Negotiations over a new deal have been ongoing for quite some time now, but little progress has been made.
The 29-year-old Spanish international is currently on a pay packet of £130,000 per week, but is seeking a huge pay rise close to the £200,000-a-week mark including bonuses. Manchester United, however, are not willing to go above £170,000-a-week including add-ons.
The situation is made complicated for Manchester United further by the interest of French champions PSG in signing Herrera on a free transfer. The Parisian outfit have already approached the Spaniard and have reportedly tabled a contract offer worth £150,000-a-week.
A senior Manchester United insider told Mirror,“Ander has been a fantastic squad player and the offer we have made him reflects that. We want him to stay. He can be a big part of the future under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But we have gone as far as we can. We can’t be held to ransom. We have to be realistic about what his value to the club is.”
Solskjaer, who was named the permanent manager last week, is keen for Herrera to stay at Manchester United, while the midfielder himself has stated previously that he would want to continue at Old Trafford. However, with the club refusing to meet his salary demands, the situation is far from being resolved at the moment.
Along with PSG, Manchester United’s Premier League rivals Arsenal are also reported to be plotting a swoop to sign Herrera up on a free transfer. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old remains a Manchester United player come next season or if he will be plying his trade elsewhere.
