Real Madrid are reportedly set to step up their chase for Paris Saint-Germain superstars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, with a squad overhaul on the cards.
As per a report from Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid are ready to make a move for PSG superstars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the summer transfer window, with the duo open to an exit following their team’s disappointing UEFA Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United on Wednesday night.
PSG’s underwhelming record in Europe’s premier club competition continued, as they became the first ever team to be eliminated after coming into the second leg with a lead of two or more away goals, following their 1-3 defeat to Manchester United.
Neymar missed both the legs against the Red Devils with an injury, while Mbappe, having inspired the French capital club to a win at Old Trafford, failed to have a similar impact the second time around, despite looking the most threatening player on the field.
And following the defeat, the star duo are disappointed with PSG’s shortcomings in the continental competition and are open to an exit in the summer transfer window, as per the report, putting Real Madrid on high-alert.
Neymar has been a long-term target for Real Madrid, with the club trying to secure his signature before he joined Barcelona. Ever since, the Brazilian international has been linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu with regularity, which was the case this past summer as well.
The player himself has fanned the flames, hinting at a move to Real Madrid in the future. In a recent interview with Globosport TV, the former Barcelona superstar said (h/t The Sun), “If I want to play for Madrid? They are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Any player linked with Real Madrid would feel attracted to play there.
“I feel happy in Paris, I am very well here, but in the future, nobody knows. A footballer’s life is very fast. Things happen at unexpected moments, nobody knows what will happen tomorrow.”
Mbappe too had been strongly linked with a switch to the Bernabeu in the past couple of years, with the Merengues trying to sign him from Monaco before he joined PSG, while attempts were made to land the World Cup winner in the last summer as well.
And as per the report from AS, with the duo getting frustrated with PSG’s record in Europe, Real Madrid are hoping to launch a charm offensive in the summer transfer window and land them, in what will be a huge coup.
The last week has been disastrous for Real Madrid as they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by arch-rivals Barcelona, while their resurgence in La Liga was also halted by the Catalans, following which they were unceremoniously dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Ajax.
Major squad changes could be afoot at Madrid, with the attack being one of the major areas of concern. Adding Neymar and Mbappe, who are easily two of the best players currently in the game, would certainly help Los Blancos turn things around next season.
Any transfer to Real Madrid for either of the duo should definitely see the world-record for transfer fee being broken. It remains to be seen, however, if there is any development in these reports in the coming months.
