Manchester United are reportedly ready to include Romelu Lukaku in a swap deal to sign Argentine international and Inter Milan contract rebel Mauro Icardi.
According to a report by The Sun, Inter Milan and Manchester United are willing to shake hands on two strikers who have had forgettable 2018-19 campaigns for different reasons. The Serie A giants are looking to offer former captain Mauro Icardi to land Romelu Lukaku, with United open to the swap deal as well.
Mauro Icardi has become one of the best strikers on show in Italy ever since he made his way to Inter Milan from Sampdoria in the summer of 2013. Nearly six years on, the player’s stock within the club also rose considerably, as he was entrusted with the responsibility of being the club captain in 2015.
But, that status was only till the current campaign, with Icardi stripped of club captaincy last month and replaced by Samir Handanovic due to his impasse with Inter over a renewal after initial reports of talks taking place over a five-year deal. The Argentine international is now believed to be set to leave the Serie A club in the summer, and Manchester United have emerged as a possible destination.
The Premier League heavyweights have been impressive in the final third under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And, one player who has largely been on the periphery over the last three months under the interim Manchester United boss is Romelu Lukaku.
However, in the last couple of weeks, even the struggling Belgian has found his feet, so much so that he is now Manchester United’s top scorer in the Premier League this season following his heroics against Southampton this weekend. But, despite an upturn in form, Lukaku continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
In fact, recent reports have suggested that United are willing to cash in on the 25-year-old, and Inter Milan are hoping to sign him. The situation surrounding Icardi, no matter how frustrating it is for manager Luciano Spalletti, now makes for a promising one, as the Nerazzurri are hoping to trade Lukaku with the beleaguered Argentine international.
Manchester United too, seem to be keen on taking up the offer to swap the two strikers – a deal that would see them replace Lukaku without spending a penny. But, the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid are also showing interest in the 26-year-old former Inter Milan captain, which makes for a potential transfer battle.
For now though, as per the report, Manchester United are the favourites to sign Mauro Icardi, with Romelu Lukaku possibly heading the other way. It now remains to be seen if a stunning swap deal indeed sees the light of the day.
