Liverpool are reportedly set to pursue a £35 million deal for Uruguayan international Maxi Gomez, with former striker Luis Suarez suggesting his name.
According to a report by The Sun, former Liverpool striker has put forward Maxi Gomez’s name to the Merseyside club as a possible target for the summer transfer window. The Reds are plotting a £35 million move for the Uruguayan international, who is also being pursued by Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Maxi Gomez has made steady progress since joining Celta Vigo from Defensor Sporting in the summer of 2017. The player quickly established himself as a regular fixture at the Galician club, going on to make 39 appearances in his maiden campaign in Spain, with a healthy return of 18 goals and 5 assists to show for his efforts.
Gomez has continued to remain an ever present figure in the side, injuries and suspension aside, this season, featuring in all but three league games. His exploits have earned the Uruguayan international several admirers, particularly from the Premier League, with Liverpool a possible suitor.
Attack remains a strong suit for the Reds despite their recent struggles. But, if those struggles have shown anything, it’s that Liverpool lack quality in depth in the final third, with the likes of Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge proving to be anything but reliable.
Such a situation can potentially be mitigated by signing someone like Gomez in the summer transfer window, and the Merseyside club are now pondering a move for the 22-year-old after his name was suggested to them by Luis Suarez.
The former Liverpool talisman has seen Gomez’s progress up close, from the duo’s time together with the Uruguayan National Side. The Reds though, will have to stave off competition from Chelsea, who are also keen on signing the Celta Vigo superstar in the summer.
But, it is unclear as to whether the Blues will be able to sign any players in the next transfer window, having been handed a transfer ban by FIFA, which if not contested will leave them in position to make a move for any of their targets in the summer.
Liverpool thus, stand in good stead, should they decide to launch the offensive for Gomez, who at £35 million is an attractive prospect to poach. It now remains to be seen if the Uruguayan international makes his way to the Premier League in the summer, or if he stays put at Celta Vigo.
