Transfer News: Manchester United’s interest in AC Milan defender Davide Calabria confirmed by player’s agent

AC Milan defender Davide Calabria’s agent has confirmed interest in his client from England, amid rumours of Manchester United monitoring him.

Manchester United are interested in securing the services of AC Milan’s Italian full-back Davide Calabria and have made an enquiry over his availability, the 22-year-old’s agent has revealed in an interview with Italian publication Calciomercato.

Calabria, a product of the Milan youth academy, burst onto the first-team scenes back in 2015 and has gone on to establish himself as regular in the senior team in the past season and a half. Till date, he has featured 77 times for the Rossoneri – 25 of which have come in the 2018-19 term – scoring twice and setting up five more goals.

Calabria has represented the Italian national team through all age groups and is on the verge of breaking into the senior team, following a series of solid displays for Milan this season. His rise in stature over the past couple of seasons hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Manchester United taking note of the 22-year-old.

Manchester United are likely to scour the transfer market for a new right-back in the summer transfer window, as club captain Antonio Valencia could be on his way out of the club. The Ecuadorian is in the final year of his contract and could be allowed to leave, amid interest from fellow Premier League club West Ham United.

The Red Devils signed Portuguese right-back Diogo Dalot last summer and can call upon veteran Ashley Young for another season, having tied him down to a new one-year deal not very long ago, while Matteo Darmian is also an option.

But, Darmian’s future at the club is uncertain, while Young will be 34 by the time the next season kicks off, meaning a succession plan needs to be put in place. This is where the interest in AC Milan ace Calabria could be stemming from.

And the 22-year-old’s agent, Gianni Vitali, has now hinted that there have been tentative enquiries made by Manchester United, although claiming that there is nothing concrete in place. “Interest from top clubs and Manchester United? No real negotiations, no, but the intentions are there and they have been there,” Vitali told Calciomercato in an interview.

“I’ve never sat down with anyone because of the simple fact that he’s very happy where he is, he’s young and he plays at high levels, it seems to me normal that he could be interesting for important teams: Manchester United has never called me, it has never gone beyond a few chats, it’s difficult to find better than Milan.”

“The clubs interested? I prefer not to name them, but I can say they were a couple of English clubs and a couple of Spaniards.”

Calabria is contracted with Milan till the summer of 2022 and with Vitali claiming in his interview that his client is very happy at his boyhood club, a summer move to Manchester United does seem extremely unlikely at the moment.
