Marcus Rashford set to be handed a new six-year deal by Manchester United, which will make him one of the highest paid players at the club.
According to a report by Daily Mirror, Manchester United have taken a big step towards reaching an agreement with Marcus Rashford over a bumper new deal. The Premier League heavyweights’ executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is confident that the club can tie the Englishman to a contract that will run through to the summer of 2025.
Rashford had always been a regular upon surprisingly breaking into the Manchester United first-team setup in the second half of the 2015-16 season. But, more often than not, instead of being asked to lead the line, the English international was being used out wide, where his natural tendencies were restricted to a great extent.
The appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, has seen Rashford return to his preferred position, having become the first-choice striker under the Manchester United caretaker boss. In fact, the 21-year-old has started all but three games that the Norwegian has overseen, with an impeccable record of 6 goals and 3 assists in 12 outings.
With an overall record of 10 goals and 8 assists all season, the player is primed for his most productive campaign till date. But, with less than 18 months left on his current contract, there were understandably concerns over his future at Old Trafford.
To that end, Manchester United have reportedly been negotiating with Rashford and his representatives over a new deal that will see him commit his long-term future to the club. And, as per the Mirror, the Red Devils have made a breakthrough in their bid to agree a renewal with their star striker.
The report claims that the player and his camp have made all the right noises over their willingness to put pen to paper on a new contract, with Solskjaer’s willingness to play him as the central striker making his mind up in that regard.
The Mirror also suggest that Rashford was indeed considering his future away from Manchester United when he was playing out wide, with Real Madrid among those that were heavily linked with him back then. But, the 21-year-old is now certain that his long-term future is with United, as per the report.
It thus, looks like Manchester United are set to continue their recent trend of tying key players down to renewals, having also announced new deals for Anthony Martial, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young over the last few weeks.
As far as Marcus Rashford is concerned, the English international will earn close to the same amount that Martial does after signing a new £200,000-a-week contract, making him one of the highest paid players at the club. All that now remains is for the renewal to be made official, which Ed Woodward expects to happen in the coming weeks.
