Phil Jones is reportedly set to be offered a new long-term deal by Manchester United, with his current contract set to run out in the summer.
According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United are ready to table a new long-term deal to Phil Jones. The English international is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season, and the Premier League heavyweights are eager to secure his long-term future amid a resurgent run.
Phil Jones has been a Manchester United player since the summer of 2011, when he joined the record 20-time English champions from Blackburn Rovers. Tipped for great things by Sir Alex Ferguson, who brought him to Old Trafford, injuries have hampered the player considerably over the last eight years or so.
But, under the tutelage of Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jones seems to have found a second wind, having started seven out of the ten games that the Norwegian has overseen.
But, just when he is starting to finally fulfill the promise that Sir Alex Ferguson saw in him, there is a real danger that 2018-19 could be his final season at Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Red Devils, with his deal set to run out at the end of the season. Manchester United do hold the option to extend his stay by a further twelve months, which they reportedly plan to exercise.
But, the report claims that the Premier League heavyweights intend to offer him a new long-term deal altogether after his performances impressed Solskjaer and the board. Manchester United are indeed reportedly in the midst of a agreeing a series of renewals, beginning with Anthony Martial’s contract extension last week.
Marcus Rashford is another player who is on the agenda for the club, as far as contract renewals are concerned. Jones himself has recently been vocal about being eager to commit his future to the Old Trafford outfit.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old defender said, “I’m very settled – I’ve been settled for a long time here. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time – it’s been great and long may it continue.
“Of course I do [want to stay] – it’s Manchester United. This club has been part of my life for many years now. I love the club, the fans, the players. We’ll see what happens. It’s not down to me what happens.”
Jones’ wish now looks set to come true, if the report is anything to go by. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United indeed reach an agreement over a new contract with the English centre-back, as they continue their resurgent run under Solskjaer.
