Ashley Young has reportedly agreed to a new one-year deal to extend his stay at Manchester United after establishing himself under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

If the report from Daily Mail is to be believed, Ashley Young has agreed a new one-year deal to extend his stay at Manchester United. The winger-turned-full-back has impressed in a withdrawn role and is likely to prolong his association at the club, according to the report.

The new deal is reported to see Young pocket £110,000 per week in terms of basic wage. While the veteran will turn 34 in the summer, it could be crucial to keep an option like Young in the squad, one who can play on either side of the back four and has proven himself under different managers recently.

Young arrived at Manchester United as a winger with a reputation to cut inside the field. Over the years though, the player kept falling down the pecking order and was seemingly set to be frozen out of the squad when he was presented with an opportunity to play at left-back under Jose Mourinho, with the then manager not happy with Luke Shaw’s performance levels.

The veteran has not looked back since. The transition was so successful that he also made a return to the senior England squad and represented the Three Lions at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. After the departure of Jose Mourinho, it seemed like Young had lost his place to Shaw on the left.

But, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started fielding Young on the right, with Antonio Valencia a shadow of his former self while Diogo Dalot still has a fair bit to learn before becoming a regular at Manchester United. What has followed has not only surprised the fans but maybe oppositions as well.

Young’s ability to shut down the quickest of players on his side has seen the veteran lock his place as the preferred choice as far as the right side of the defence is concerned.

To many, Young embodies the very fighting spirit of Manchester United while also being one of the actual leaders in the dressing room at the club, for now at least. Manchester United are doing shrewd business, with Anthony Martial also signing a new contract while there are many others in line to do the same.
