Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a move to sign 23-year-old midfielder Stefano Sensi from Sassuolo in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Italian outlet Sportmediaset, Barcelona have set their sights on Stefano Sensi, who has emerged as a shock midfield target for the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana have already initiated talks with the 23-year-old midfielder’s representatives, with negotiations set to begin with Sassuolo as well.
Stefano Sensi is a part of the latest generation of senior club level footballers in Italy. But, unlike players like Domenico Berardi, Federico Chiesa and Federico Bernardeschi, the 23-year-old midfielder has gone under the radar, only somewhat coming into prominence this season, having finally established himself as a regular at Sassuolo.
In all, Sensi has made 17 appearances across all competitions for the Neroverdi, impressing with his tenacious performances in the middle of the park. His exploits at Sassuolo also helped the player make his Italy debut last year, and he is now starting attract the best of clubs in Europe.
Barcelona seem to be showing the most concrete of interest, with the 23-year-old being the latest midfielder to be linked with them. The Blaugrana are indeed believed to be in the market for a midfielder, although those have been more well known names like Adrien Rabiot and Frenkie de Jong.
Sensi though, seems to fit the mould of players that Barcelona have most recently targeted, the latest being former Sassuolo teammate Kevin-Prince Boateng, which suggests he might be seen as a backup option to the likes of Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic.
Sensi could thus, be a possible replacement for the likes of Denis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho, who have been heavily linked with moves away from Camp Nou. Alternatively, the 23-year-old midfielder could grow in stature gradually, before eventually succeeding either Rakitic or Busquets in a few years.
Either way, Barcelona do seem to have a concrete interest in the Italian international, having begun talks with his representatives. The La Liga champions are also set to establish contact with Sassuolo in order to negotiate a deal for the summer transfer window.
AC Milan are also interested in signing the player, although the chance to play for Barcelona might just be too tempting to turn down. It now remains to be seen if the Catalans launch the offensive for Stefano Sensi anytime soon, and if that paves the way for the 23-year-old midfielder to move to Camp Nou.
