Real Madrid are reportedly looking to bankroll a €100 million January move to land Inter Milan’s world-class striker Mauro Icardi
According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Balon, Real Madrid are stepping up their efforts to sign Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi. The La Liga heavyweights are willing to shell out €100 million to land the world-class Argentinean striker in the January transfer window.
Icardi joined Inter Milan from Sampdoria in the summer of 2013 and has since, blossomed into a world-class striker. Now in his sixth season with the Nerazzurri, the player is arguably the single most pivotal figure at San Siro, having also been entrusted with the club captaincy over the last few campaigns.
After narrowly missing the chance to become the Capocannoniere, Icardi has been in his elements once again this season, although he is four goals behind trailblazing striker Krzystof Piatek. And, his exploits have created admirers in the form of Real Madrid, who are keen on securing his services.
In fact, Los Blancos hold a long-standing interest in the Inter Milan captain, stemming largely from the struggles of Karim Benzema in recent seasons. This term, however, the Frenchman has been in fine form, with 11 goals across all competitions making him the Real Madrid top scorer.
But, at 31, Benzema does not have many years of top-class football left in him, with his issues in the last two seasons suggesting the same. With Mariano Diaz not really seen as a successor to the Frenchman, as things stand, it is clear that Real Madrid need to delve into the transfer market to sign a long-term replacement, with Icardi a viable target.
But, a possible roadblock stands in their way of landing the world-class Argentinean striker, with reports suggesting that Icardi is on the cusp of agreeing a new long-term deal with Inter Milan. Real Madrid though, are looking to change the player’s mind by tabling a staggering €100 million bid to land him next month.
The European champions would also hike his current wages considerably, which might help them tempt him. But, a mid-season transfer might be a tall order, especially with Inter Milan still alive on all fronts, although a Serie A title challenge looks to be out of the question.
But, a €100 million bid might just be too good to refuse, with the sum being large enough to reinvest in different areas of the pitch. As things stand, a January moves is not highly likely, although it remains to be seen if Real Madrid can land the 25-year-old.
