Mauricio Pochettino is urging Tottenham superstar Christian Eriksen to reject the advances of Real Madrid and stay put at the North London club
As reported by The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino has advised Christian Eriksen to snub Real Madrid and follow his path by signing a new deal with Tottenham. The Spurs boss extended his stay at the North London club this past summer, signing a new five-year deal despite widespread interest in his services.
Eriksen has enjoyed a productive five-year stint with Tottenham since making his way from Ajax in the summer of 2013. During this period, the Danish playmaker has progressed leaps and bounds, with many considering him to be the best creative players on show in the Premier League.
However, while he is a key figure for Tottenham, Eriksen’s future at the club is a tad bit uncertain. The 26-year-old has less than two years remaining on his current contract with Spurs and negotiations over a renewal have hit a roadblock. This situation has piqued the interest of Real Madrid, who are ready to launch the offensive for him.
Luka Modric has flattered to deceive for much of the campaign so far, with a long World Cup campaign and a lack of adequate rest showing its effects. Furthermore, the Croat’s future at Real Madrid is not set in stone either, especially after flirting with the idea of a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu this past summer.
While he ended up staying put in the end, Real Madrid are now open to parting ways with the veteran midfielder, and are looking for a top class successor. Eriksen is thus, a viable target for Los Blancos, with the Tottenham superstar a like-for-like replacement for the 33-year-old.
Spurs though, would be unwilling to part ways with their prized asset, with their primary objective being to tie him down to a bumper new deal. However, talks between Tottenham and Eriksen’s representatives have stalled, which would boost Real Madrid’s chances of snapping him up.
But, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has urged the Danis superstar to reject the advances of Real Madrid by signing the dotted line at the North London club.
“He knows and we know what we’re doing and of course we’re working hard. The club is working to try to take the best decisions. And Christian is going to take the decision that is best for him. I hope Christian continues to develop his career with Tottenham. I prefer that he’s going to sign the new contract and spend a long time with Tottenham. It will be fantastic.”
With Eriksen set to enter the final year of his deal with Tottenham next summer, the North Londoners would hope the renewal is agreed upon quickly. If not, they will stand to lose the Danish superstar rather cheaply, with Real Madrid resolute in their interest in him.
At 26, the player is set to enjoy the best years of his career imminently, and a move to Real Madrid definitely appears to be attractive, despite his manager’s suggestion. It now remains to be seen if Mauricio Pochettino is able to persuade Christian Eriksen to stay put at Tottenham, or if he ends up leaving instead.
