Liverpool are reportedly plotting a shock £85 million move to land Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona in the January transfer window
According to a report by The Sun, Liverpool are exploring the possibility of breaking their transfer record for the second successive January transfer window. Ousmane Dembele is the subject of interest of the Reds, who are considering a shock £85 million move to swoop him away from Barcelona.
Dembele arrived at Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017 amid a lot of excitement and hype surrounding his talent. But, the ensuing 15 months have been riddled with struggles, owing to poor form and injury troubles, which have restricted his appearances to a great extent.
Dembele only managed to feature 23 times for Barcelona last season, but he has been much improved this season – 6 goals and 2 assists in 15 outings. However, discipline is a major issue holding him back, as evidenced by his axing from the Barcelona squad this past weekend against Real Betis. As a result, it is believed that the player’s future could be away from Camp Nou, which has alerted Liverpool.
The Reds aren’t really in need of any major attacking reinforcements, with Jurgen Klopp already having the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri at his disposal. Thus, the interest in Dembele does not make a great deal of sense, as his addition could restrict the minutes of every attacking player, to varying extents.
Conversely, Dembele’s addition could also help keep every attacking player fit and firing towards the latter part of the season, if Klopp can manage their minutes properly. Additionally, with Mohamed Salah, who is coincidentally linked with Barcelona, facing an uncertain future at Anfield, Dembele could be a long-term solution for Liverpool.
To that end, Liverpool are willing to break their club record for a second successive year with a bid worth £85 million. Klopp has already hinted towards his interest in the Barcelona superstar in a cheeky manner, and if he is available for transfer, a move could be possible.
Dembele’s indisciplined ways may have led to rumours of a future away from Camp Nou. But, Liverpool seem to be willing to take a chance on his with a club record £85 million move in the January transfer window, and it remains to be seen if they are able to prise him away from Barcelona in the winter.
